What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)? 

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common lung disease causing restricted airflow and breathing problems. It is sometimes called emphysema or chronic bronchitis. In people with COPD, the lungs can get damaged or clogged with phlegm. Symptoms include cough (sometimes with phlegm), difficulty breathing, wheezing and tiredness. 

How the COPD Community Exercise Clinic Can Help 

Research has shown that regular exercise and effective self-management strategies can help maintain fitness and well-being as well as improve symptoms and quality of life. 
 

The COPD Exercise Clinic can help you:  

  • Manage your COPD symptoms 

  • Improve fitness levels, energy, and endurance 

  • Reduce stress, anxiety, and depression 

  • Reduce illness and hospital admission 

The COPD Community Exercise Clinic Program Includes:  

  • Individual physical assessment and goal setting 

  • 12-week group education and exercise session (in person or virtual) 

  • Personalized home exercise program 

  • Health and self management education 

  • Connecting with community resources 

Our Classes:

Our weekly classes are 60 minutes long and include:  

  • Education on health and exercise

  • Warm-up exercises

  • Strength training using resistance bands

  • Aerobic training with standing and seated exercise options

  • Balance and stretching routines

  • Counselling and support on COPD self-management and exercise 

Getting Started:

To join an exercise class, a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is required. The referral can be faxed to the Lakeridge Health Ambulatory Rehabilitation Centre at 905-665-2416 or call at 905-668-6831 ext. 53093.

Pickering – Chestnut Hill Recreation Centre (1867 Valley Farm Rd)
